While the South Pacific Games are just two months away, Samoa is preparing the host the other Pacific nation for the major sporting event of the region. The Games comitee spoke with samoan player George Leafa (G/F) about the upcoming basketball tournament. The New-Zealand based player will be one of the leader of the host nation.

How is your preparation going for the Games?
Quite well, Just finished the NZ National Competition with the Wellington Saints so now just doing gym sessions before heading over to Samoa in July.

Who will be your main competitors?
At this point you just can't underestimate any team, especially at this level, so I would say ALL teams.

How long have you participated in the sport?
Have played in New Zealand's National league for 10 years & before that I've been playing right throughout High School for Naenae College... so pretty much a long time.

What do you enjoy about the sport?
Probably the competitiveness among players & I guess making your shots.

What have the biggest challenges been so far for you to overcome in your sport?
Injury. You know your body doesnt warn you when you're about to have an injury so its a real killer if its near finals or at a crucial game.

Have you won or participated in any other significant events?
Representing Samoa will be the biggest yet, but travelling overseas with the NZA Basketball team.

What are you looking forward the most during Games time?
Meeting the other teams probably.

What other sports will you like to watch when the Games are on?
Actually will probably try to watch any sport as much as I can because we play on most of the days so will probably miss a lot of them.

What makes your sport special?
World wide sport recognised anywhere & probably the legends in the game...

Samoa were dominant throughout their 99-63 win over American Samoa in their third game of the FIBA Men's Polynesian Cup at the N.U.S. Gym last night.
