The Samoan team made a strong South Pacific Games rewarded by a bronze medal. Led by two very talented players Brandyn Akana and Alesana Alesana, Samoa ended the preliminary phase at the first place behind Tahiti and New Caledonia, allowing only 58pts per game to their opponents. This strong defense couldn't resist to Guam in semifinal, the US island won 91-85 but Samoa bounce back to take the bronze medal away from Fiji, the home team, for 3 points.
Akana was one the best players of the SPG with 18.8pts 46.5%FG, Alesana was huge inside with 13.4pts 9.6rbs. Cavan Scanlan came out as the third weapon with more than 10pts per game. Few samoans are playing in the NCAA, but this country certainly deserve more respect. The proudly Samoa wants to show how good they are, they will have an opportunity to do so when they'll face Australia and New Zealand for the 2004 Olympics spots.
