Vanuatu Basketball Federation (VBF) this week announced its final Squad in both the Men's and Women's category of its 3x3 Basketball Teams. It will be the first time Vanuatu will participate in the 3X3 format. In the Men's National team are Manoah Moli, Aaron Daniel, Vira Hensley and Antoine Marceau. In the Women's National team are Lola Izono, Frances Izono, Pauline Malanga and Nancy Patterson. The official coaches are Sacha Duthu and Pierre Izono. The players have gone through a thorough selection process which sees experienced, talents and skills tailored to produce a confident 3x3 team in the coming Games. VBF's NBDO Sacha Duthu and also the Coach of the national team tells Daily Sports, 'To select the final teams is never easy, especially when it comes to the announcement you are telling someone that he can't represent his country, and for this occasion it is a competition on national ground. 'But the players understood that it's just the beginning of 3x3 basketball journey in Vanuatu, and that more competitions are yet to come. None of them gave up despite that they are not in the final team', Coach Duthu said.
The women's team contains a bulk of a variety of skills themselves. Coach Duthu said, 'We have a variety of profiles from the girls' team. That's what we need in basketball. Overall they are potential players, who can make that difference when applying their own personality and profile to impact the game. 'Someone like Nancy Patterson is an experienced national basketball player, and she commands experience in the team. She's like the big sister of the team, always trying to motivate her team mates. 'Frances Izono, our captain, makes me think of me as a player and she knows that she is not the strongest player on the court because of her physic, she is smart to develop something else - the game intelligence. 'Her sister Lola can play with the boys, having developed a boyish technic herself, and if you look at the international level, the best female players are of that kind, very confident and apply skills in the 3x3 game that few girls can do. 'Pauline Malanga is the best shooter of the team. She is also comfortable with playing as a Center and back to the basket, which brings another confident value to the team', said Duthu. For Vanuatu to partake and compete in a Regional event as in this Pacific Mini Games, and on home soil makes history in the books of VBF and the nation. Vanuatu has always been recognized nationally and known in its participation on the normal 5-man Basketball competitions. Coach Duthu continued to explain that, '3x3 is a faster paced game from its five-on-five counterpart. You cannot have the same kind of physics as for the 5x5. And that's what we have for Team Vanuatu. It's a very young group, but talented and who were waiting for something to happen for them. And as for the Women's team, we have a different kind of talent, so it allows us to adapt to the other team specificities. 'The men's team is captained by Aaron Daniel, 'Big Brother'. He knows how to talk to his team mates, to make them feel confident and be efficient. Even if he is not tall, he has a good step game, he creates space by driving. Every team needs a warrior to lead the fight, and that is Antoine Marceau. He is the fittest player of the squad, and he is the player that can tackle a defensive mission. He loves sharing the ball and assists best when he can. Manoah Moli is the youngest of the squad. He plays on different spots with his height of 1m90, and is a very accurate long distance shooter. Also with great talents is Vira Hensley. If he drives, he is barely stoppable with his strong physic. He is a hard working player', concluded the 3x3 Basketball Coach. Countries participating in the men's 3x3 Basketball competitions include PNG, Samoa, Solomon Islands, American Samoa, Northern Mariannas, Cooks, Fiji, and Vanuatu. In the Women's 3x3 Basketball competition Vanuatu competes against PNG, Samoa, Nauru, Cooks and Fiji.
