In 2006 the University of the South Pacific will launch its All-rounder Scholarship Scheme which will give students from around the region an opportunity to study full-time at the University while furthering their sporting careers.
The USP is divided in three campuses: Alafua (Samoa), Emalus (vanuatu) and Laucala (Fiji). USP has received support from various local and international companies and individuals in the form of sponsorship for these scholarships which will allow successful applicants to maximise their career potential through higher education in a discipline of their choice.
A total of 50 scholarships will be awarded to "all-rounders" who will commence his or her full-time studies at USP in 2006. Athletes will be chosen from one of the following disciplines: Athletics, Basketball, Netball, Rugby, Soccer, Swimming, Volleyball and Weightlifting.
Unfortunately to date the response from sporting organisations and individuals around the region, the response in the form of applications for these scholarships, has been quite low. ONOC fully supports the USP initiative and we would encourage all those involved in sports development in the region to assist in identifying worthwhile candidates for these scholarships. While there may a feeling among sportsmen and women in the region that they may not be "university material" the USP also offers pre degree and foundation courses which can be accessed through the All-rounder scholarship.
