Everything went according to plan in Mt Gambier where twelfth ranked Hawks (2-1) outleveled bottom-ranked Mount Gambier Pioneers (0-3) 89-45 on Saturday. Hawks dominated down low during the game scoring 50 of its points in the paint compared to Mount Gambier Pioneers' 20 and made 18-of-21 free shots (85.7 percent) during the game. They outrebounded Mount Gambier Pioneers 53-27 including a 17-0 advantage in offensive rebounds. The best player for the winners was guard Marena Whittle (180-94, college: NDSU, agency: LBM Management) who had a double-double by scoring 20 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 blocks. Naturalized Turkish guard Funda Nakkasoglu (173-95, college: Florida) chipped in 26 points and 5 rebounds. At the other side the best for losing team was guard Hannah Young (178-93, college: Kent St.) who recorded 11 points and 9 rebounds and guard Jasmin Howe (173-95, college: NW Missouri St.) added 9 points and 5 rebounds respectively. Mount Gambier Pioneers' coach gave up on the game allowing to play eleven players seeing no chance for a win. Hawks moved-up to seventh place in League. Loser Mount Gambier Pioneers still closes the standings with three games lost. Hawks will face higher ranked Knox Raiders (#3) in Wantirna South in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Mount Gambier Pioneers will play on the road against Rangers (#12) in Dandenong and hope to get finally their first victory.
