Regular Season Round 17: Melbourne - Canberra 107-52
Date: March 19, 2022
An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Melbourne. First ranked Boomers faced second-ranked Canberra Capitals. Host Boomers (12-5) smashed guests from Canberra (11-6) 107-52. It was a key game for the top position in the league. Boomers dominated down low during the game scoring 60 of its points in the paint compared to Canberra Capitals' 32. Boomers forced 20 Canberra Capitals turnovers and outrebounded them 42-19 including a 34-12 advantage in defensive rebounds. Boomers shot the lights out from three sinking 12 long-distance shots on high 57.1 percentage. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists comparing to just 8 passes made by Canberra Capitals' players. The former international center Cayla George (193-1989) stepped up and scored 23 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists (perfect from the field making all nine shots !!!) for the winners and international center Eziyoda Magbegor (193-1999) chipped in 19 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists (on 8-of-9 shooting from the field). Five Boomers players scored in double figures. American point guard Brittney Sykes (175-1994, college: Syracuse) responded with 14 points and the former international power forward Kelsey Griffin (188-1987, college: Nebraska) scored 11 points and 5 rebounds. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Boomers maintains first place with 12-5 record. Loser Canberra Capitals keep the second position with six games lost. Boomers will meet at home Townsville Fire (#6) in the next round which should be theoretically another easy game. Canberra Capitals will play against Southside Flyers (#7) in Dandenong and hope to secure a win.
