Regular Season Round 15: Sydney - Illawarra 84-79
Date: January 15, 2023
Very expected game in Sydney where 10th ranked Illawarra Hawks (2-21) were defeated by first ranked Kings (17-5) 84-79 on Sunday. However just five-point win is not that big difference and the fans of host team counted on more convincing victory. Kings made 17-of-22 free shots (77.3 percent) during the game. The best player for the winners was American guard Derrick Walton Jr (185-1995, college: Michigan) who scored 19 points and 7 assists. Forward Xavier Cooks (203-1995, college: Winthrop) chipped in 8 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists. Kings' coach Chase Buford used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. At the other side the best for losing team was American guard Tyler Harvey (194-1993, college: EWU) who recorded 24 points and the former international power forward Samson Froling (212-2000, college: Creighton) added 14 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists respectively. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. The victory was the sixth consecutive win for Kings. Defending champion maintains first place with 17-5 record. Illawarra Hawks lost their eleventh game in a row. They stay dead last with 21 lost games. Kings will meet at home New Zealand Breakers (#3) in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Illawarra Hawks will play against Bullets (#9) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
