There was a minor upset when much higher ranked Mount Gambier Pioneers (5-1) lost to fifth ranked Hawks (5-1) in Mt Gambier 77-87 on Saturday. Hawks shot the lights out from three sinking 16 long-distance shots on high 53.3 percentage. Guard Ariel Jones (170) notched 27 points and 6 rebounds to lead the effort and point guard Shelby Britten (163-1997) supported her with 19 points and 12 assists. Even a double-double of 31 points and 14 rebounds by guard Miela Goodchild (178-2000, college: Duke) did not help to save the game for Mount Gambier Pioneers. American forward Haliegh Reinoehl (188-1998, college: Akron) added 16 points and 5 rebounds for lost side. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Hawks have an impressive five-game winning streak. They moved-up to second place, which they share with 5 other teams including defeated Mount Gambier Pioneers. Hawks will meet at home Cavaliers (#19) in the next round which should be an easy win for them. Mount Gambier Pioneers will play against Tigers (#16) in Melbourne and hope to secure a win.
