Geer ignites as Cougars capture long-awaited title in Big V Grand Final classic-Aug 30, 2025
2025 Big V Men’s Grand Final Review
McKinnon Cougars 87 def. Hume City Broncos 81
Geer ignites as Cougars capture long-awaited title in Grand Final classic

The McKinnon Cougars have reclaimed their place at the top of Big V basketball, outlasting a determined Hume City Broncos side 87-81 in a thrilling 2025 Men’s Grand Final. In their third straight grand final appearance and fifth overall, the Cougars avenged last year’s heartbreaking loss and added to their 2023 championship, securing a second title in three years behind a masterful performance from Australian guard Jordan Geer.

It was a night where class, experience, and clutch shot-making proved decisive—and no one embodied that more than Jordan Geer, who exploded for a game-high 29 points. In a high-pressure environment, Geer was the calmest player on the floor, pulling the strings with big-time plays every time the game tightened.

McKinnon’s well-rounded effort didn’t end with Geer. Remo Simankevicius, the Lithuanian-Australian swingman, was a force on the boards with 11 points and a massive 17 rebounds, anchoring the Cougars in the paint. Captain Mitchell Barry and guard Livai Smith added 11 points apiece, giving McKinnon critical depth in a high-stakes, high-energy contest.

The Broncos—playing in their fourth Grand Final and seeking their first title since 2004—threw everything at the Cougars. American guard Ricardo Time led the charge with 25 points, while import forward Kavione Green was outstanding with 21 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 steals, filling the stat sheet and igniting Hume’s surges at both ends.

Kiwi big man Robert Coman contributed 14 points, and Zach McKenzie chipped in 10, as Hume battled to stay within striking distance all night.

Down by as much as 10 points midway through the third quarter, the Broncos fought back to take the lead late in the quarter to be up by two points at three quarter time. A 22-14 fourth quarter and a late Geer 3-pointer helped seal the Cougars' Big V title.
