The Perry Lakes Hawks today announced the re-signing of co-captain Ben Purser (200-F-90, college: Augusta) for the 2022 NBL1 West season.

Known for his all-round game and defensive qualities, the 200cm forward has played for the Hawks every year since 2008. In 2021, he played his 337th SBL/NBL1 game to become the Hawks' all-time leader in games played. He finished the 2021 season with 347 career games.

Between 2010 and 2013, Purser played a season of college basketball in the United States before having a two-year stint with the Perth Wildcats in the NBL as a development player.

In the State Basketball League (SBL), Purser helped guide the Hawks to grand finals in 2009 and 2011, where they fell short both times. He was appointed team captain in 2012 and went on to lead the Hawks to another grand final appearance in 2018, where he won his first championship while earning game MVP honours. He was named in the SBL All-Defensive Five four years in a row between 2016 and 2019. He was also named SBL All-Star Five in 2018 and SBL Most Improved Player in 2009.

After a COVID-affected year in 2020, Purser helped the Hawks finish the 2021 NBL1 West regular season as minor premiers with an 18-4 record and guided them through to the grand final. In the grand final, he recorded 16 points, four rebounds and four assists in a 92-82 win over the Rockingham Flames to claim his second championship with the Hawks. In 21 games, he averaged 13.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 1.4 steals per game.

The soon-to-be 32-year-old said upon re-signing: "I am looking forward to running it back with the boys to defend our title. Such a great group to be around - excited to lock in for another season with the Hawkies!"

The 2022 NBL1 West season is set to get underway in mid April.
