WNBL Round 11 (Regular Season): Perth beat Canberra in the most crucial game of the week

Here is the last round review presented by LBM Management.

An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Perth. Third ranked Perth Lynx faced 4th placed Canberra Capitals. Host Perth Lynx (11-3) smashed guests from Canberra (6-8) 75-49. Perth held Canberra to an opponent 24.3 percent shooting from the field compared to 39.1 percent accuracy of the winners. The best player for the winners was the former international forward Anneli Maley (185-1998, college: TCU) who had a double-double by scoring 16 points, 21 rebounds and 4 assists. The former international guard Alex Wilson (175-1994) chipped in 28 points and 6 assists. Perth Lynx's coach Ryan Petrik felt very confident using entire bench which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. French forward Kadiatou Sissoko (188-1999, college: USC) produced 20 points and 5 rebounds for the guests. Perth Lynx have an impressive series of six victories in a row. They moved-up to second place, which they share with Townsville. Canberra at the other side keeps the fourth position with eight games lost. They share it with Southside. Perth is looking forward to face Canberra (#4) on the road in the next round. Canberra will have a break next round.
An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Townsville. First ranked Bendigo Spirit faced second-ranked Townsville Fire. Guests from Bendigo (13-2) defeated host Townsville Fire (11-3) 73-61. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Townsville Fire. orchestrated the victory by scoring 17 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists. Kelsey Griffin contributed with 14 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners. The former international guard Miela Sowah (180-2000, college: Duke) answered with 16 points and 5 rebounds for Townsville. The victory was the tenth consecutive win for Bendigo Spirit. Defending champion maintains first place with 13-2 record. Townsville at the other side keeps the second position with three games lost. They share it with Perth. Bendigo will play against Sydney (#7) on the road in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Townsville will play against Geelong U. (#8) and hopes to get back on the winning track.
An interesting game where Sydney (#7) rolled over host Canberra (#4) with 30-point difference 91-61 on Saturday evening. It was a great evening for Unique Thompson who led her team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 13 points and 10 rebounds (on 6-of-7 shooting from the field). Nyadiew Puoch responded with 14 points and 6 rebounds. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Sydney maintains seventh place with 4-12 record. Loser Canberra Capitals keeps the fourth position with eight games lost. They share it with Southside. Sydney will meet at home league's leader Bendigo in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Canberra will play against the league's second-placed Perth and will have a slim chance for a victory.

Other games of round 11 were quite predictable and ended without any surprises. Here they are:
Sydney was defeated by Townsville in a road game 79-74. Southside beat Adelaide at home 85-72. Bottom-ranked Geelong U. was destroyed by Perth on the opponent's court 106-78. Sydney was outscored by Southside in a home game 94-113.

Townsville - Sydney 79-74

There was no surprise when 7th ranked Sydney Flames (4-12) were defeated on the road by second ranked Townsville Fire (11-3) 79-74 on Tuesday. However just five-point win is not that big difference and the fans of host team counted on more convincing victory. It was a great evening for forward Alicia Froling (190-1996, college: SMU) who led her team to a victory scoring 25 points and 9 rebounds. Abbey Ellis helped adding 16 points. American forward Unique Thompson (190-1999, college: Auburn) responded with 24 points and 9 rebounds and forward Shaneice Swain (185-2003) scored 23 points. Four Sydney players scored in double figures. Townsville maintains second place with 11-3 record having just three points less than leader Bendigo, which they share with Perth. Loser Sydney Flames keeps the seventh position with 12 games lost. Townsville will meet at home bottom-ranked Geelong U. (#8) in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Sydney will play against the league's leader Bendigo and hope to secure a win.

It was a great evening for American forward Unique Thompson (190-1999, college: Auburn) who led her team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 13 points and 10 rebounds (on 6-of-7 shooting from the field). Jessica McDowell-White helped adding 17 points (perfect from the field making all seven shots !!!). Five Sydney Flames players scored in double figures. Forward Nyadiew Puoch (190-2004) responded with 14 points and 6 rebounds and Zitina Aokuso scored 14 points and 4 assists. The game between closely ranked teams ended with fifth ranked Southside Flyers' (6-8) home victory over 6th ranked Adelaide Lightning (4-10) 85-72 on Sunday. Southside forced 20 Adelaide turnovers and outrebounded them 40-25 including 25 on the defensive glass. Southside looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. It was a great evening for the former international point guard Maddison Rocci (168-1998) who led her team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 17 points, 7 rebounds and 10 assists. International center Cayla George (193-1989) helped adding 7 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assists and 4 blocks. The former international forward Steph Talbot (188-1994) responded with 24 points and 4 assists and American forward Sania Feagin (190-2003, college: S.Carolina) scored 11 points and 9 rebounds. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Southside moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Canberra. Adelaide lost their third game in a row. They keep the sixth position with ten games lost. Southside will meet at home bottom-ranked Geelong U. (#8) in the next round. Adelaide will play against Townsville and hope to secure a win.

Perth outrebounded Geelong U. 46-31 including a 27-16 advantage in defensive rebounds. Perth looked well-organized offensively handing out 27 assists. It was a great evening for the former international forward Anneli Maley (185-1998, college: TCU) who led her team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 22 points, 13 rebounds and 7 assists. Chinese center Xu Han (208-1999) helped adding 22 points and 5 rebounds. Four Perth Lynx players scored in double figures. Perth Lynx's coach Ryan Petrik felt very confident using entire bench and allowed the starting five to rest. American forward Mackenzie Holmes (190-2001, college: Indiana, agency: LBM Management) responded with 34 points (!!!) and 9 rebounds and the former international point guard Shyla Heal (167-2001, agency: LBM Management) scored 20 points and 4 assists. The victory was the sixth consecutive win for Perth Lynx. They moved-up to second place, which they share with Townsville. Geelong U. lost their eighth game in a row. Southside dominated down low during the game scoring 76 of its points in the paint compared to Sydney Flames's 42. Southside looked well-organized offensively handing out 32 assists comparing to just 16 passes made by Sydney's players. It was a great evening for the former international point guard Maddison Rocci (168-1998) who led her team to a victory scoring 20 points, 5 rebounds and 9 assists. International center Cayla George (193-1989) helped adding 23 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists.
