There was a minor upset when 7th ranked Kings (5-7) were defeated on the road by ninth ranked Cairns Taipans (4-9) 96-92 on Thursday. It was a great evening for Brazilian-American guard Scott Machado (186-90, college: Iona) who led his team to a victory scoring 24 points and 5 assists. The former international power forward Nathan Jawai (209-86, college: Midland CC) helped adding 22 points and 6 rebounds (on 10-of-12 shooting from the field). Five Cairns Taipans players scored in double figures. Naturalized Canadian guard Dejan Vasiljevic (190-97, college: Miami, FL) responded with 32 points (perfect behind the arc making all five shots) and American point guard Casper Ware (178-90, college: LBSU) scored 28 points and 4 assists (was perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line). Cairns Taipans moved-up to eighth place. Loser Kings keep the seventh position with seven games lost. Cairns Taipans will meet higher ranked Adelaide 36ers (#5) in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Kings will play against Melbourne Phoenix and hope to secure a win.
