An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Gwynneville. Third ranked Melbourne Phoenix faced 4th placed Illawarra Hawks. Guests from Melbourne (10-8) smashed host Illawarra Hawks (10-10) 95-63. They outrebounded Illawarra Hawks 41-29 including 33 on the defensive glass. Melbourne Phoenix looked well-organized offensively handing out 26 assists comparing to just 11 passes made by Illawarra Hawks' players. The best player for the winners was New Zealand forward Yannick Wetzell (208, college: SDSU) who had a double-double by scoring 18 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 blocks (on 7-of-8 shooting from the field). The former international forward Ryan Broekhoff (197-90, college: Valpo) chipped in 26 points and 6 rebounds. Five Melbourne Phoenix players scored in double figures. American guard Justinian Jessup (201-98, college: Boise St.) produced 21 points and international power forward Samson Froling (212-0, college: Creighton) added 10 points and 10 rebounds respectively for the hosts. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Melbourne Phoenix maintains third place with 10-8 record having seven points less than leader Melbourne. Illawarra Hawks at the other side keep the fourth position with ten games lost. They share it with Sydney. Melbourne Phoenix will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game.
