There was no surprise in Gwynneville where 9th ranked Cairns Taipans (7-26) were defeated by fourth ranked Illawarra Hawks (17-15) 93-81 on Sunday. Illawarra Hawks outrebounded Cairns Taipans 43-30 including a 18-4 advantage in offensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Illawarra Hawks made 11 blocks. American guard Tyler Harvey (194-93, college: EWU) stepped up and scored 22 points, 7 rebounds and 9 assists for the winners and his fellow American import guard Justinian Jessup (201-98, college: Boise St.) chipped in 24 points. Brazilian-American guard Scott Machado (186-90, college: Iona) responded with 17 points and 9 assists and South Sudanese forward Majok Deng (208-93, college: ULM) scored 16 points. Five Illawarra Hawks and four Cairns Taipans players scored in double figures. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Illawarra Hawks maintains fourth place with 17-15 record. Cairns Taipans lost eighth consecutive game. They stay dead last with 26 lost games. Illawarra Hawks will meet New Zealand Breakers (#8) in the next round. Cairns Taipans will play against Melbourne Phoenix and hope to secure a win.
