There was a small surprise when seventh ranked Cairns Marlins (6-4) won against at home 5th ranked Brisbane Capitals (7-7) 97-82 on Friday. Cairns Marlins made 16-of-18 free shots (88.9 percent) during the game. Cairns Marlins outrebounded Brisbane Capitals 39-23 including 28 on the defensive glass. South Sudanese forward Majok Deng (208-93, college: ULM) nailed a double-double by scoring 46 points (!!!) and 16 rebounds for the winning side and guard Mirko Djeric (193-95) accounted for 8 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists. Nicholas Stoddart (-0) came up with 34 points (!!!) and 5 assists and center Ben Volkman (206, college: Maryville, MO) added 28 points and 5 rebounds (on 12-of-15 shooting from the field) respectively for Brisbane Capitals in the defeat. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Cairns Marlins moved-up to sixth place in League. Loser Brisbane Capitals keep the fifth position with seven games lost. Cairns Marlins will meet league's second-placed Mackay Meteors on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Brisbane Capitals will play against Bendigo Braves and hope to secure a win.
