No shocking result in a game when third ranked Townsville Fire (4-2) beat on the road 7th ranked Bendigo Spirit (1-4) 74-67 on Friday. Townsville Fire forced 26 Bendigo Spirit turnovers. Strangely Bendigo Spirit outrebounded Townsville Fire 50-31 including a 36-22 advantage in defensive rebounds. The former international forward Zitina Aokuso (194-98) nailed 15 points and 7 rebounds for the winning side and power forward Nadeen Payne (188-93, agency: LBM Management) accounted for 9 points and 9 rebounds. Swingman Anneli Maley (187-98, college: TCU) came up with a double-double by scoring 18 points and 24 rebounds and forward Megan McKay (190-97, college: St.Mary's, CA) added 13 points and 13 rebounds respectively for Bendigo Spirit in the defeat. Four Bendigo Spirit players scored in double figures. Bendigo Spirit's coach tested ten players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. Townsville Fire maintains third place with 4-2 record having five points less than leader Melbourne. Bendigo Spirit lost third consecutive game. They keep the seventh position with four games lost. Townsville Fire will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Bendigo Spirit will play against Sydney Uni Flames (#8) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
