Rather predictable result in Gwynneville where fifth ranked Illawarra Hawks (7-6) defeated bottom-ranked Cairns Taipans (3-6) 87-81 on Saturday. However just six-point win is not that big difference and the fans of host team counted on more convincing victory. Illawarra Hawks dominated down low during the game scoring 54 of its points in the paint compared to Cairns Taipans' 28 and made 21-of-27 free shots (77.8 percent) during the game. They outrebounded Cairns Taipans 45-33 including 33 on the defensive glass. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Illawarra Hawks made 7 blocks. The best player for the winners was the former international center Duop Reath (210-96, college: LSU) who had a double-double by scoring 18 points and 10 rebounds. American guard Antonius Cleveland (196-94, college: SEMO) chipped in 16 points and 6 rebounds. Four Illawarra Hawks players scored in double figures.
