Regular Season Round 12: Melbourne - SE Melbourne 94-87

Date: February 17, 2022
Another interesting game was a derby match between two teams from Melbourne: United (#1) and Melbourne Phoenix (#3). United (11-4) won against visiting Melbourne Phoenix (9-5) 94-87. They outrebounded Melbourne Phoenix 45-33 including a 37-23 advantage in defensive rebounds. United players were unselfish on offense dishing 21 assists. It was a good game for naturalized Sudanese center Jo Lual-Acuil Jr (213-1994, college: Baylor) who led his team to a victory with 30 points and 9 rebounds (on 11-of-13 shooting from the field). Forward Jack White (201-1997, college: Duke) contributed with 9 points and 14 rebounds for the winners. The former international swingman Mitch Creek (196-1992) replied with 23 points and 5 rebounds and Chinese center Qi Zhou (217-1996) added 13 points, 9 rebounds and 4 blocks in the effort for Melbourne Phoenix. Five Melbourne Phoenix players scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. United have a solid three-game winning streak. Defending champion maintains first position with 11-4 record. Melbourne Phoenix at the other side dropped to the second place with five games lost. United will play against bottom-ranked Cairns Taipans (#10) at home in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Melbourne Phoenix will play against Perth Wildcats (#4) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
