Regular Season Round 16: Illawarra - SE Melbourne 103-97
Date: March 17, 2022
There was a small surprise when fifth ranked Illawarra Hawks (12-8) beat their close opponent Melbourne Phoenix (11-8) in Gwynneville 103-97 on Thursday. The winners were led by the former international center Duop Reath (210-1996, college: LSU) who had that evening a double-double by scoring 22 points and 12 rebounds (on 9-of-11 shooting from the field) and American guard Antonius Cleveland (196-1994, college: SEMO) supported him with 16 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Even 25 points and 8 rebounds (on 11-of-14 shooting from the field) by Chinese center Qi Zhou (217-1996) did not help to save the game for Melbourne Phoenix. The former international swingman Mitch Creek (196-1992) added 15 points for lost side. Both teams had five players each who scored in double figures. Illawarra Hawks moved-up to fourth place. Melbourne Phoenix lost third consecutive game. They keep the fifth position with eight games lost. Illawarra Hawks will meet bottom-ranked New Zealand Breakers (#10) in the next round where they are favorite. Melbourne Phoenix will play against Kings (#3) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
