There was a minor upset when 6th ranked Melbourne Phoenix (11-11) was defeated on the road by ninth ranked Cairns Taipans (7-13) 90-85 on Saturday. Cairns Taipans made 17-of-20 free shots (85.0 percent) during the game. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. The best player for the winners was power forward Keanu Pinder (205-1995, college: Arizona) who had a double-double by scoring 21 points and 12 rebounds (on 9-of-11 shooting from the field). Brazilian-American guard Scott Machado (185-1990, college: Iona) chipped in a double-double by scoring 16 points, 5 rebounds and 12 assists. At the other side the best for losing team was American guard Xavier Munford (193-1992, college: URI) who recorded 20 points and 8 rebounds and the former international swingman Mitch Creek (196-1992) added 21 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists respectively. Five Cairns Taipans and four Melbourne Phoenix players scored in double figures. Melbourne Phoenix's coach tried various players' combinations and tested in total eleven players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. Cairns Taipans have a solid three-game winning streak. They moved-up to eighth place. Melbourne Phoenix lost sixth consecutive game. They keep the sixth position with 11 games lost. Cairns Taipans will meet at home higher ranked JackJumpers (#5) in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Melbourne Phoenix will play against Adelaide 36ers in Findon and hope to secure a win.
