Date: October 20, 2022
There was a surprise result in Auckland where eighth ranked Melbourne Phoenix (3-3) smashed higher ranked New Zealand Breakers (4-2) 99-77 on Thursday. Melbourne Phoenix shot 62.1 percent from the field. Melbourne Phoenix had a 27-16 advantage in offensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. Worth to mention a great performance of American center Alan Williams (203-1993, college: UCSB) who helped to win the game recording 16 points and 9 rebounds (on 7-of-8 shooting from the field) and the former international swingman Mitch Creek (196-1992) who added 15 points and 5 rebounds during the contest. Four Melbourne Phoenix players scored in double figures. At the losing side American forward Jamaal Brantley (200-1993, college: Cameron) responded with 17 points and his fellow American import center Derek Pardon (203-1996, college: Northwestern) scored 16 points and 5 rebounds (on 7-of-8 shooting from the field). The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Melbourne Phoenix moved-up to sixth place. New Zealand Breakers at the other side dropped to the second position with two games lost. They share it with Cairns. Melbourne Phoenix will meet at home Adelaide 36ers (#7) in the next round. New Zealand Breakers will play against JackJumpers (#4) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
