Regular Season Round 17: Sydney - SE Melbourne 111-106
Date: January 29, 2023
There was no surprise when 5th ranked Melbourne Phoenix (15-13) lost to first ranked Kings (19-7) in Sydney 106-111 on Sunday. However just five-point win is not that big difference and the fans of host team counted on more convincing victory. Kings made 25-of-28 free shots (89.3 percent) during the game. It was a great shooting night for Kings especially from behind the arc, where they had solid 52.6 percentage. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. Forward Xavier Cooks (203-1995, college: Winthrop) nailed a triple-double by scoring 16 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists for the winning side and American guard Derrick Walton Jr (185-1995, college: Michigan) accounted for 22 points and 5 assists. The former international swingman Mitch Creek (196-1992) came up with 29 points and 9 rebounds and Syrian-American guard George Kell III (193-1996, college: SDSU, agency: Slash Sports) added 18 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists respectively for Melbourne Phoenix in the defeat. Both teams had five players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. Defending champion maintains first place with 19-7 record. Loser Melbourne Phoenix keeps the fifth position with 13 games lost. Kings will meet Perth Wildcats (#6) on the road in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Melbourne Phoenix will play against Bullets in Brisbane and hope to secure a win.
