Regular Season Round 17: Canberra N. - Illawarra H. 98-53

Date: June 17, 2023
Not a big story in a game when 12th ranked Hawks (3-12) were outscored by ninth ranked Nationals (8-7) in Canberra 98-53 on Saturday. Nationals dominated down low during the game scoring 52 of its points in the paint compared to Hawks' 28. They outrebounded Hawks 43-22 including a 32-15 advantage in defensive rebounds. Nationals looked well-organized offensively handing out 28 assists comparing to just 12 passes made by Hawks' players. Guard Bianca Dufelmeier (171-1992, college: UAB) nailed 26 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists for the winning side and guard Lizzy Tonks (173, college: CSUN) accounted for 25 points and 7 rebounds. Worth to mention Dufelmeier played also at Eurobasket Summer League, which helped get the job in pro basketball. Nationals' coach felt very confident using entire bench which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Lauren Gatwood (-1988) came up with 13 points and guard Ella Dent (170-2002) added 12 points respectively for Hawks in the defeat. Nationals have an impressive series of five victories in a row. They moved-up to eighth place, which they share with 3 other teams. Loser Hawks dropped to the thirteenth position with 12 games lost. They share it with Inner WB. Nationals will meet at home higher ranked North Bears (#3) in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Hawks will play against Sharks (#6) and hope to secure a win.
