Regular Season Round 5: SE Melbourne - NZL Breakers 103-100
Date: October 28, 2023
Not a big story in a game when 10th ranked New Zealand Breakers (1-4) were edged on the road by third ranked Melbourne Phoenix (5-3) 103-100 on Saturday. However just three-point win is not that big difference and the fans of host team counted on more convincing victory. Melbourne Phoenix made 19-of-23 free shots (82.6 percent) during the game. American center Alan Williams (203-1993, college: UCSB) nailed a double-double by scoring 21 points, 13 rebounds and 4 assists for the winning side and American-Puerto Rican point guard Gary Browne (185-1993, college: WVU) accounted for 18 points and 8 assists. American point guard Parker Jackson-Cartwright (180-1995, college: Arizona) came up with 33 points (!!!) and 8 assists and New Zealand-Irish Finn Delany (200-1995, college: SW Baptist) added 21 points respectively for New Zealand Breakers in the defeat. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches allowed to play bench players in such tough game. Melbourne Phoenix have a solid series of four victories in a row. They moved-up to second place. New Zealand Breakers lost fourth consecutive game. They stay at the bottom position with four games lost. Melbourne Phoenix will meet at home Cairns Taipans (#6) in the next round. New Zealand Breakers will play against Kings (#3) in Sydney and hope to win that game.
