Regular Season Round 17: SE Melbourne - Perth 91-103

Date: January 27, 2024
Not a big story in a game when 10th ranked Melbourne Phoenix (10-15) lost at home to second ranked Perth Wildcats (16-8) 103-91 on Saturday. Perth dominated down low during the game scoring 70 of its points in the paint compared to Melbourne Phoenix's 50. Perth looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Perth made 7 blocks. The former international power forward Keanu Pinder (210-1995, college: Arizona) nailed a double-double by scoring 23 points and 11 rebounds for the winning side and American guard Bryce Cotton (182-1992, college: Providence, agency: Pensack Sports) accounted for 21 points and 8 assists (was perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line). Five Perth Wildcats players scored in double figures. The former international swingman Mitch Creek (196-1992) came up with 29 points and 6 rebounds and guard Ben Ayre (184-1995, college: Newman) added 23 points, 5 rebounds and 8 assists respectively for SE Melbourne in the defeat. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Perth maintains second place with 16-8 record behind leader Melbourne. Loser Melbourne Phoenix stay at the bottom position with 15 games lost. Perth will meet at home NZL Breakers (#8) in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. SE Melbourne's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Melbourne to the arena Melbourne.
