Taranaki Airs (NBL) signed 40-year-old American forward Marcel Jones, who holds dual passports, for the upcoming season. Jones, who played college basketball at Oregon State, is returning to the Airs after previously playing for the team. Last summer, he played for the Bulls in the NBL, averaging 7.1ppg and 4.3rpg in 21 games.
In 2008, he was drafted by the Iowa Energy (D-League) in the fourth round (50th overall).
He graduated from Oregon State and this will be his 19th season in pro basketball.
Jones, a very experienced player, has traveled extensively during his pro career, playing in seventeen different countries on five continents (Europe, Asia, Latin America, Australia, and North America). He has played professionally in Bahrain (Al-Ahli, Al-Riffa, Al-Ittihad, and Sitra), Bosnia, Finland, Germany, Italy (Cantu and Biella Next), Kosovo (Sigal Prishtina and Bashkimi), Kuwait (Qadsia), Lebanon (Mayrouba), Qatar (Al Gharafa), Romania (Pitesti), Saudi Arabia (Al Ittihad), Slovenia (Helios Suns), Syria, Turkey (Akhisar Bld), United Kingdom, Uruguay (Malvin), and New Zealand (Rangers, Rams, and Tuatara).
Among many awards, his team made it to the Kuwait League Semifinals in 2022. He was also voted the Asia-Basket.com All-Bahrain League Import Player of the Year back in 2019. He is close to retirement age as a player. It may be one of the last seasons in his extensive career, which he may end at Airs.
