Sharks are NBL Champions - Jul 15, 2013
ZEROFEES SOUTHLAND SHARKS have won their first Bartercard NBL championship, defeating FICO FINANCE NELSON GIANTS 92-81. It was only fitting that Southland coach PAUL HENARE won his first championship as a head coach on home turf in the Hawkes Bay. Kevin Braswell (188-G-79, agency: Priority Sports, college: Georgetown) top-scored for the Sharks with 24 points, and fellow American Brian Conklin (198-F-89, college: St.Louis) added 21 points and nine rebounds. Small forward Leon Henry was named Most Valuable Player of the finals, after stepping up big over the weekend, tallying 15 points and six rebounds in the final, and 19 points and 13 rebounds in the semi. Southlands team effort got the job done, with role players like Luke Martin (181-PG-81, college: UTEP) (nine points and six assists), Dan Peck (196-G/F-88) (eight points) and Gareth Dawson (205-C/F-89) (eight points and nine rebounds) huge. Martin, who has been a fantastic point guard in the league for many seasons, finally got his first title, which was well deserved, as he ran the team perfectly over the weekend. Playing his 350th NBL game, Phill Jones (196-G-74) played his heart out with 14 points, but fouled out in the final quarter. Both Josh Pace (196-G/F-83, agency: Dynasty Sports, college: Syracuse) and Erron Maxey (198-F-78, college: Providence) each added 18 points, but Pace had a slow start, only scoring two points in the first half. The Sharks got off to a flyer, shooting 70% in the early stages of the first half, as the the Giants struggled, shooting in the low 30s. A 24-point halftime lead gave the Sharks a large buffer heading into the second half. Nelson did fight back several times, closing to within 11, but the large deficit would be too much as they finished runners-up for the second time in four years. Joining the league in 2010, the Sharks have been a competitive team, making the playoffs in their first two seasons. But under Henare, the franchise peaked at the right time and made the adjustments, as they had lost to both Wellington and Nelson in the last week of the regular season. Henare was also deservedly awarded Coach of the Year, while Conklin was named Outstanding Forward. Lindsay Tait (190-G-82, agency: Duran International) cleaned up six awards, including Most Valuable Player, Outstanding Guard and All-Star Five selection. Tait averaged 20.1 points and led the league in assists (8.1). Pace was unlucky not to win Most Valuable Player, but did get selected for the All-Star Five, joining BENY ANTHONY (OceanaGold Nuggets), who won Outstanding NZ forward, and NICK HORVATH (Telecom Business Hub Jets).
