The Wellington Saints have confirmed that star guard Shea Ili (184-G-1992) will not return for the remainder of the 2025 NZNBL season as he returns to Melbourne to continue recovery following a head knock sustained in the team’s game against the Manawatu Jets on May 17.

Since 2022, Ili has sustained multiple head knocks and concussions in the Australian NBL.

Ili was playing with the Saints and in the NZNBL for the first time since 2019. He managed six games this season, averaging 17.8 points, 5.7 rebounds, 6.5 assists and 2.0 steals per game.

Ili said of his departure: "Sorry Saints fans, I'm sad to say goodbye for the rest of the season due to my injury. I need to focus on my recovery and this time is crucial to get me back to 100%. The boys are in great hands and have the squad to get the job done. Excited to see the boys get to work and bring that trophy back home."

Ili recently re-signed with Melbourne United and is set to play his seventh season for the club this upcoming 2025-26 NBL season.

American guard Elijah Pepper was the top scorer of the day in the world.
