The game had a very big importance for third-rankedMarlins as it allowed them to take a leadership position. Marlins smashed bottom-ranked South West Metro Pirates in Cairns 109-69 . Cairns M. made 30-of-37 charity shots (81.1 percent) during the game, while SW Metro P. only scored ten points from the stripe. They outrebounded SW Metro P. 45-34 including 33 on the defensive glass. Cairns M. players were unselfish on offense dishing 22 assists. SW Metro P. was plagued by 26 personal fouls down the stretch. The former international swingman Kody Stattmann (202-2000, college: Virginia) scored 33 points (!!!) and 5 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and naturalized New Zealand power forward Luca Yates (208-2004, college: Barry) chipped in 15 points and 13 rebounds during the contest. Four Marlins players scored in double figures. The best for the losing side was Jai Blackman-Corowa with 10 points and guard Brandon Edwards (188-2001) scored 8 points and 5 rebounds. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. As mentioned above they are at the top of the standings, which they share with SC Phoenix and Logan T. SW Metro P. at the other side still closes the standings with three games lost.
