Big V Round 4 (Regular Season): RMIT keep a leadership position

The game had a very big importance for second-ranked Redbacks as it allowed them to take a leadership position. Redbacks defeated 4th ranked Jets at home 107-100. 26 personal fouls committed by Sunbury helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Josh Uhr-Henry fired a double-double by scoring 22 points and 13 rebounds for the winners. American guard Darnell Hoskins Jr (180, college: SVSU, agency: 6th Man Basketball Agency) chipped in 21 points and 5 assists. Canadian guard Joshua Yorke-Frazer (183-1995, college: Seneca) produced 45 points (!!!) for lost side. Jets' coach rotated eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. As mentioned above they are alone now at the top position. Sunbury at the other side dropped to the fifth place with two games lost. They share the position with Melbourne Uni. Sunbury will play next round against Blackburn trying to get back on the winning streak. RMIT will try to continue on its current victory against fourth ranked Hume City in Tullamarine.
Another exciting game was between fifth ranked McKinnon and one of their biggest challengers Jets where McKinnon (4-1) beat Jets (3-2) on the road with 18-point difference 103-85. It was a key game for the second position in the league. Worth to mention a great performance of American power forward Shannon Fowler (203-1993, college: UWG) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 14 points, 6 rebounds, 11 assists and 5 blocks. Jordan Geer contributed with 18 points and 6 rebounds for the winners. Canadian guard Joshua Yorke-Frazer (183-1995, college: Seneca) replied with 26 points for Jets. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. McKinnon have a solid four-game winning streak. They moved-up to second place, which they share with Keysborough. Sunbury at the other side dropped to the fifth position with two games lost. They share it with Melbourne Uni. McKinnon will play against Camberwell (#11) in Melbourne in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Sunbury will play on the road against Blackburn (#10) in Melbourne and hopes to get back on the winning track.
Bottom-ranked Devils (0-4) tried to put together a comeback for its first victory of the season, but they fell short in the 104-94 loss to fourth ranked Hume City Broncos (3-1) in Werribee on Saturday evening. Worth to mention a great performance of Kavione Green who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 28 points and 10 rebounds. Hume City Broncos' coach Matt Foster used an eleven-player rotation and allowed the starting five to rest. At the losing side Junior Garbrah responded with 26 points and 6 steals. Hume City maintains fourth position with 3-1 record. Defending champion Wyndham still closes the standings with four games lost. They share the position with Camberwell. Hume City will meet at home Bellarine (#8) in the next round. Wyndham will play against Melbourne Uni (#5) and hopes to get finally their first victory.

Rest of the games of round 4 were quite predictable and ended without any surprises. Here they are:
Keysborough defeated Bellarine in a road game 80-64. Blackburn was smashed by McKinnon at home 48-97. Shepparton won against Pakenham on the opponent's court 104-98. Winless Camberwell unfortunately lost to Melbourne Uni in a home game 89-98. Pakenham recorded a loss to RMIT on the road 81-91.

There was no surprise in Bellarine where 7th ranked Storm (2-3) was defeated by second ranked Cougars (4-1) 80-64 on Saturday. Worth to mention a great performance of American point guard Anthony Williams (178-1995, college: Clark Atlanta) who helped to win the game recording 18 points and 8 rebounds and the other American import forward Gerrard Newby (196-1995, college: Union, KY) who added 16 points and 8 rebounds during the contest. Williams is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top summer league for players who want to play basketball overseas. Five Cougars players scored in double figures. Cougars' coach used an eleven-player rotation and allowed the starting five to rest. At the losing side American guard Malik McKinney (190, college: West Liberty) responded with 21 points and 7 assists and power forward Liam McInerney (206-1990, college: Stetson) scored 6 points and 16 rebounds. Keysborough maintains second position with 4-1 record behind leader RMIT, which they share with McKinnon. Loser Storm keeps the seventh place with three games lost. They share the position with Shepparton and Pakenham. Keysborough will meet at home Pakenham (#9) in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Bellarine will play against Hume City in Tullamarine and hope to secure a win.

No shocking result in a game in Melbourne where fifth ranked Cougars (4-1) smashed 10th ranked Vikings (1-4) 97-48 on Saturday. McKinnon outrebounded Blackburn 45-33 including 37 on the defensive glass. McKinnon looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. Worth to mention a great performance of forward Shaquille Maharaj (196-1997, college: Camosun) who helped to win the game recording 25 points and 6 rebounds and naturalized Lithuanian swingman Remo Simankevicius (198-1996, college: SNHU) who added 13 points and 7 rebounds during the contest. At the losing side forward Athiaan Manyiel (201, college: LSUE) responded with 9 points and 6 rebounds and Alex Kanellis scored 2 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Cougars have a solid four-game winning streak. McKinnon moved-up to second place, which they share with Keysborough. Loser Vikings keeps the tenth position with four games lost. McKinnon will meet at home Camberwell (#11) in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Blackburn will play against Sunbury and hope to win that game.

There was a minor upset in Pakenham where 7th ranked Warriors (2-3) were defeated by ninth ranked Gators (2-3) 104-98 on Saturday. Shepparton made 20-of-23 free shots (87.0 percent) during the game. They also forced 20 Pakenham turnovers. Worth to mention a great performance of American forward Ryan Batte (198-1999, college: Thomas More) who helped to win the game recording 20 points and 9 rebounds and Joshua Kooiman who added 23 points during the contest. At the losing side Matt Berkec responded with a double-double by scoring 20 points and 13 rebounds and Stephen Coffey scored 21 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists. Five Shepparton and four Pakenham players scored in double figures. Shepparton moved-up to seventh place, which they share with Pakenham and Bellarine. Shepparton will meet at home higher ranked Melbourne Uni (#5) in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Not a big story in a game when 7th ranked Warriors (2-3) were defeated on the road by second ranked Redbacks (5-1) 91-81 on Sunday. RMIT dominated down low during the game scoring 62 of its points in the paint compared to Warriors's 42 and made 17-of-19 free shots (89.5 percent) during the game. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when RMIT made 7 blocks.
