The most exciting game of round 17 in the NBL took place in Cairns. This derby game ended with only three-point home defeat of second-ranked Cairns Taipans (17-10) to eighth ranked Adelaide 36ers (12-14) 99-96 on Monday evening. It was quite big embarassment for the home team. Adelaide 36ers looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. American guard Antonius Cleveland (196-1994, college: SEMO) orchestrated the victory by scoring 27 points and 7 rebounds. His fellow American import forward Robert Franks (201-1996, college: WSU) contributed with 20 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners. Adelaide 36ers' coach CJ Bruton used an eleven-player rotation in such tough game. American forward DJ Hogg (203-1996, college: Texas A&M) answered with 26 points and 8 rebounds for Cairns Taipans. Adelaide 36ers maintains eighth place with 12-14 record. Cairns Taipans at the other side keep the second position with ten games lost. Adelaide 36ers are looking forward to face higher ranked United (#7) in Melbourne in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Cairns Taipans will play on the road against Perth Wildcats (#6) and are hoping to win this game.

NBL top team - Kings (19-7) managed to deliver another win on Friday. This time they beat sixth ranked JackJumpers (15-12) in Hobart 91-77. Dejan Vasiljevic nailed 24 points and 5 rebounds for the winning side. Milton Doyle came up with 9 points and 5 rebounds for JackJumpers in the defeat. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Defending champion maintains first place with 19-7 record. Loser JackJumpers dropped to the fourth position with 12 games lost. Kings will meet Perth Wildcats (#6) on the road in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. JackJumpers will play against Illawarra Hawks in Gwynneville and hope to secure a win.

There were no big surprises in other games of round 17: NZL Breakers smashed Brisbane on the road 99-71. Perth destroyed Illawarra on its own court 106-86. Melbourne unfortunately lost to NZL Breakers in Auckland 74-80. Cairns managed to beat Brisbane at home 94-87. Perth was defeated by Tasmania JJ on the opponent's court 94-102. Sydney beat SE Melbourne in a home game 111-106.



SE Melbourne - Cairns 85-80

No shocking result in a game when third ranked New Zealand Breakers (16-10) crushed 9th ranked Bullets (8-19) in Brisbane 99-71 on Thursday. New Zealand Breakers forced 19 Bullets turnovers. American center Derek Pardon (203-1996, college: Northwestern) nailed 17 points and 9 rebounds for the winning side and his fellow American import Jarrell Brantley (201-1996, college: Charleston) accounted for 22 points. American guard Tyler Johnson (193-1992, college: Fresno St.) came up with 20 points and 5 rebounds and the former international guard Nathan Sobey (190-1990, college: Wyoming) added 13 points, 5 rebounds and 8 assists respectively for Bullets in the defeat. Four Bullets players scored in double figures. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. New Zealand Breakers have a solid series of three victories in a row. They maintain third place with 16-10 record having just three points less than leader Sydney. Very expected game when 10th ranked Illawarra Hawks (3-23) were smashed on the road by fifth ranked Perth Wildcats (14-12) 106-86 on Friday. Perth Wildcats made 20-of-21 free shots (95.2 percent) during the game. American guard Bryce Cotton (182-1992, college: Providence, agency: Pensack Sports) nailed 40 points (!!!), 7 rebounds and 4 assists (was perfect 11-for-11 from the free throw line !!!) for the winning side and his fellow American import forward Brady Manek (206-1998, college: UNC) accounted for 16 points and 7 rebounds. Five Perth Wildcats players scored in double figures. The former international power forward Samson Froling (212-2000, college: Creighton) came up with a double-double by scoring 21 points and 10 rebounds and American guard Tyler Harvey (194-1993, college: EWU) added 23 points respectively for Illawarra Hawks in the defeat.
