This derby game ended with only two-point defeat on the road of 3rd ranked Cougars (7-3) to first ranked Cougars (9-1) 91-89 on Saturday evening. Keysborough outrebounded McKinnon 45-33 including 16 on the offensive glass. American forward Gerrard Newby (196-1995, college: Union, KY) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 22 points and 16 rebounds. The other American import forward Benjamin Okhotin (198-1999, college: PLNU, agency: Warren Sports International) contributed with 34 points (!!!) for the winners. Cougars' coach used an eleven-player rotation in such tough game. Guard Mitchell Barry (190) replied with 16 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists for McKinnon. Cougars have an impressive six-game winning streak. Keysborough maintains first position with 9-1 record. McKinnon at the other side keeps the third place with three games lost. Keysborough are looking forward to face league's second-placed Hume City in Tullamarine in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. McKinnon will play at home against Pakenham and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Worth to mention about the upset in a game between Warriors (5-5) and Storm (4-7), which took place in Bellarine. Higher ranked Warriors lost to ninth ranked Storm in a road game 81-85. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Warriors. Worth to mention a great performance of American power forward Kerry Richardson (202-1999, college: Morehouse, agency: Elevate Sports Alliance) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 21 points and 11 rebounds and Malik McKinney who added 23 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists during the contest. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Wyndham moved-up to tenth place. Shepparton lost third consecutive game. They dropped to the seventh position with six games lost. Wyndham will meet at home league's leader Keysborough in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game. Shepparton will play against Blackburn (#12) in Melbourne and hope to secure a win.
There were no big surprises in other games of round 8: Blackburn was beaten by Camberwell on the road 114-104. RMIT won against Shepparton on its own court 114-102. Wyndham unfortunately lost to Bellarine in a road game 95-99. Melbourne Uni recorded a loss to Sunbury at home 82-88. Camberwell was crushed by Hume City on the opponent's court 121-99.
The most impressive performance of 8th round was 33 points (!!!) and 13 rebounds by Sean Conway of Camberwell.
