NBL One Round 2 (Regular Season): Cockburn lose to Giants

There were only 2 rounds played so far and it's still very beginning of the Regular Season in NBL One. The round was exceptionally exciting as six games ended with a tiny margin. Here is the last round review presented by Job Market.

The most important game of round 2 took place in Kalgoorlie where Giants crushed Cougars 106-66 on Saturday night. Goldfields G. dominated down low during the game scoring 54 of its points in the paint compared to Cougars's 34 and made 19-of-23 free shots (82.6 percent) during the game. Goldfields G. forced 22 Cockburn turnovers. Swingman Joshua Duach (197-2003, college: Iona) had a double-double by scoring 28 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists to lead the charge for the winners and American forward De'Sean Parsons (201-1995, college: Portland St.) chipped in 24 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists during the contest. Center Chan Nai (208-2000, college: Baton Rouge) responded with 18 points and 5 rebounds. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Cougars will play next round against Joondalup W. trying to make it back to the top of the standings. Giants will try to continue on its current victory against SW Slammers in Bunbury.
Forestville Eagles recorded a loss in Mt. Barker. Visitors were edged by Eastern Mavericks 120-119. American guard Broderick Robinson (185-1995, college: UMKC) notched 41 points (!!!), 8 rebounds and 6 assists to lead the effort and BJ Symons supported him with 25 points and 7 rebounds. Even 36 points (!!!), 7 rebounds and 6 assists by the former international center Daniel Johnson (212-1988, college: Pepperdine) did not help to save the game for Forestville E.. Eastern Mavericks will play against Southern T. in Morphett Vale in the next round. Forestville Eagles will play at home against Woodville W. to get more than just one victory in their record.
Quite upsetting was Sydney C.'s home defeat in a game versus Illawarra H. 2 84-77. The best player for the winners was Kobe McDowell-White who scored 32 points and 5 assists. Obi Kyei produced a double-double by scoring 26 points, 15 rebounds and 4 assists for the hosts. Illawarra H. 2 will meet Newcastle F. in the next round which should be an easy win for them. Sydney C. will play against HKBA Spiders in Hornsby and hope to win that game.

There were no shocking results in the other games in round 2: W.Adelaide B. lost to S.Adelaide P. on the opponent's court 75-77. Woodville W. outscored N.Adelaide R. in a home game 94-61. Southern T. managed to beat Norwood F. on the road 97-84. Sturt S. lost to C.District L. on its own court 87-93. Norths B. was smashed by Manly Warr. in Narrabeen 61-80. Hills H. lost to undefeated Sutherland at home 70-77. Newcastle F. lost to Cent.Coast C. on the opponent's court 71-98. Winless HKBA Spiders recorded a loss to Bankstown B. in a home game 64-74. Albury W.B. was crushed by Maitland on the road 104-62. Canberra B. beat Inner WB on its own court 89-83. Manly Warr. lost to Penrith in a road game 72-84. Newcastle F. unfortunately lost to Albury W.B. at home 72-77. Casey managed to beat Mt.Gambier on the opponent's court 81-80. Melbourne T. was defeated by Kilsyth C. in a home game 77-85. Eltham W. smashed Dandenong R. on the road 94-72. Bendigo won against Keilor T. on its own court 87-71. Ballarat M. was outscored by Geelong U. in a road game 98-72. Sandringham S. lost to Hobart C. at home 76-80. Knox R. crushed Diamond V.E. on the opponent's court 104-73. Kilsyth C. beat Nunawading S. in a home game 72-67. NW Tasmania won against Bendigo on the road 90-81. Casey lost to undefeated Hobart C. on its own court 75-78. NW Tasmania recorded a loss to Waverley F. in Mount Waverley 88-104. Ringwood crushed Frankston B. at home 95-74. Melbourne T. beat Diamond V.E. on the opponent's court 78-62. Knox R. destroyed Waverley F. in a home game 110-79. Rockingham F. outscored East Perth E. on the road 115-94. Perry Lakes H. managed to beat Lakeside L. on its own court 88-87. Willetton T. defeated Mandurah in a road game 95-81. Perth R. beat Joondalup W. at home 85-83. Geraldton B. won against Kalamunda ES on the opponent's court 78-67. Winless SW Slammers were outscored by Kalamunda ES in a home game 61-81. Geraldton B. recorded a loss to Joondalup W. on the road 111-107. Winless Lakeside L. lost to undefeated Warwick S. on its own court 79-117.
The most impressive stats of the last round was 25 points and 6 rebounds by Keli Leaupepe of Knox R..

Eastern M. - Forestville E. 120-119

Forestville Eagles recorded a loss in Mt. Barker. Visitors were edged by Eastern Mavericks 120-119. Eastern M. players were unselfish on offense dishing 28 assists. South Adelaide Panthers used a home court advantage and edged the opponent from Woodville 77-75 on Saturday night. However just two-point win is not that big difference and the fans of host team counted on more convincing victory. S.Adelaide P. forced 19 W.Adelaide B. turnovers. The best player for the winners was American forward Chris Brandon (203, college: NKU, agency: Elevate Sports Alliance) who scored 23 points and 9 rebounds. Forward Tom Kubank (201-1995, college: Mary) chipped in 20 points and 4 assists. Brandon is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Naturalized South Sudanese forward Lat Mayen (206-1998, college: Nebraska) produced 33 points (!!!) and 9 rebounds and guard Sean Stock (189-2004) added 12 points and 7 rebounds respectively for the guests. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. South Adelaide Panthers will meet at home Sturt S. in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Bearcats will play against Norwood F. in Marden and hope to win that game.

There was a surprise result in Flinders Park where Woodville Warriors smashed Rockets 94-61 on Saturday. Woodville W. dominated down low during the game scoring 54 of its points in the paint compared to Rockets's 30. Woodville W. forced 22 N.Adelaide R. turnovers and outrebounded them 42-29 including 29 on the defensive glass. Woodville W. looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists comparing to just 11 passes made by N.Adelaide R.'s players. The best player for the winners was point guard Nicholas Wurm (183-1997, college: Dickinson St.) who scored 23 points and 5 assists. Center Steven Parfitt (-2002) chipped in a double-double by scoring 18 points and 11 rebounds. Four Woodville Warriors players scored in double figures. American forward Tobias Dowdell (201-1990, college: ABU) produced 13 points and 5 rebounds and forward Koop McCalop (-1994) added 8 points and 9 rebounds respectively for the guests. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Woodville Warriors will meet Forestville E. in the next round. Rockets will play against C.District L. and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
