NBL One Round 8 of Regular Season

The round was exceptionally exciting as six games ended with a tiny margin. Here is the last round review presented by Job Market.

Round 8 games in the NBL One were marked by very close results. The first upset was a home defeat of second-ranked Townsville H. (2-2) to fourth ranked Brisbane C. (3-1) 82-71. It was a key game for the top position in the league. Capitals looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. Worth to mention a great performance of forward Matthew Johns (203-1999, college: Concordia-SP) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 14 points and 15 rebounds and naturalized Nigerian guard Uche Dibiamaka (193-1999, college: St.Edward's) who added 18 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists during the contest. Guard Ethan Betts (188-1998, college: Umpqua CC) responded with 20 points and 8 assists. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Brisbane C. have a solid three-game winning streak. They keep a position of league leader. Townsville H. at the other side dropped to the fifth place with two games lost. They share the position with 4 other teams. Brisbane C. are looking forward to face SW Metro P. (#10) in Runcorn in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Townsville H. will play on the road against Ipswich F. (#4) in Booval and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Very significant was Brisbane C.'s (#4) 36-point road victory against one of their biggest challengers Cairns M. 111-75. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Marlins. It was a key game for the top position in the league. The winners were led by naturalized Nigerian guard Uche Dibiamaka (193-1999, college: St.Edward's) who scored that evening 18 points and 8 rebounds and Samuel McDaniel supported him with 18 points and 5 rebounds. Even 23 points and 6 rebounds by swingman Kody Stattmann (202-2000, college: Virginia) did not help to save the game for Marlins. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Brisbane C. have a solid three-game winning streak. They keep a position of league leader. Cairns M. at the other side dropped to the fifth place with two games lost. They share the position with 4 other teams. Quite upsetting was Frankston B.'s (#3) home defeat in a game versus fifth ranked Casey 92-83. It was a key game for the second position in the league. The best player for the winners was Nate Roberts who had a double-double by scoring 21 points and 16 rebounds (on 10-of-12 shooting from the field). Michael Harris produced 35 points (!!!) and 5 rebounds for the hosts. Casey (7-3) moved-up to second place, which they share with Mt.Gambier. Loser Blues dropped to the fifth position with four games lost. They share it with 3 other teams. Casey will meet at home Melbourne T. (#10) in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Frankston B. will play against Kilsyth C. (#5) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Ipswich F. managed to outperform SW Metro P. at home 93-86. Mackay recorded a loss to Northside W. on the opponent's court 94-91. SD Spartans defeated Northside W. in a home game 83-79. Mackay was smashed by SC Phoenix on the road 121-94. Hobart C. destroyed Eltham W. on its own court 89-69. Geelong U. was outscored by Knox R. in Melbourne 97-76. Dandenong R. recorded a loss to Knox R. at home 72-89. Melbourne T. crushed Bendigo on the opponent's court 100-78. Sandringham S. smashed Ballarat M. in a home game 106-87. Bendigo managed to outperform Frankston B. on the road 91-84. Mandurah was rolled over Joondalup W. on its own court 80-104. Perth R. defeated Lakeside L. in Northbridge 89-74. Warwick S. smashed Cockburn at home 98-76. Rockingham F. destroyed SW Slammers on the opponent's court 116-83. Geraldton B. outscored Perry Lakes H. in a home game 96-68. Mandurah managed to beat East Perth E. on the road 88-86. Perth R. lost to undefeated Warwick S. on its own court 69-101. Goldfields G. beat Willetton T. in Kalgoorlie 81-70. Kalamunda ES destroyed SW Slammers at home 106-81. Goldfields G. managed to outperform Cockburn on the opponent's court 86-80.

There was a minor upset in Narrabeen where 5th ranked Mustangs (5-4) were defeated by eighth ranked Manly Warringah Sea Eagles (5-4) 104-91 on Saturday. Manly Warr. made 21-of-27 free shots (77.8 percent) during the game. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Manly Warr. made 8 blocks. The best player for the winners was guard Isaiah Lee (188-2000, college: Sacramento St.) who scored 34 points (!!!) and 4 steals. American swingman Preston Purifoy (196-1992, college: UAB, agency: Players Group) chipped in 22 points and 9 rebounds. Penrith outrebounded Inner WB 54-34 including a 36-25 advantage in defensive rebounds. The best player for the winners was swingman Jonah Pares (192-2003) who had a double-double by scoring 21 points, 19 rebounds and 4 assists. Forward Zeke Evans (204-2003) chipped in a double-double by scoring 18 points and 10 rebounds. American forward Dalen Ridgnal (201-2001, college: Wichita St.) produced a double-double by scoring 10 points and 13 rebounds and Maxwell Clark added 17 points respectively for the guests. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Bulls' coach rotated eleven players and allowed the starting five to rest. The best player for the winners was forward Che Brogan (198-2006) who scored 26 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals. International Jacob Furphy (195-2006) chipped in 12 points and 6 assists. American guard Austin Patterson (190-2002, college: Montana) produced 19 points and point guard Michael Yoong (175-2002) added 8 points and 5 rebounds respectively for the hosts. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Excellence have an impressive seven-game winning streak. However just two-point win is not that big difference and the fans of host team counted on more convincing victory. Gold Coast R. made 22-of-29 free shots (75.9 percent) during the game. The best player for the winners was New Zealand swingman Reuben Te Rangi (198-1994) who scored 27 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Guard Boston Mazlin (189-2002) chipped in 24 points and 9 rebounds.
