Brazil registered the first win at the Torneio Eletrobras in San Carlos. They held off New Zealand in the opener. Marquinhos Vieira (207-F-84) stepped up with 14 points to lead the hosts.
Brazil held the Tall Blacks to just 9 points in the opening quarter to build a 10-point lead 19:9. New Zealand struggled offensively scoring 7 points in the second quarter as Brazil stretched the lead. The hosts ensured a 33:16 halftime advantage. The Latin American team did not slow down in the second half. Brazil accumulated a 54:32 lead with one period remaining. New Zealand never recovered and had to surrender at the end. Marcelo Magalhaes (199-F/G-75, agency: Interperformances) accounted for 10 points, while Guilherme Giovannoni (202-F-80, agency: Interperformances) and Hilario Nene (207-C-82) added 9 points each for the winners. Tai Jack Webster (186-G-95) responded with 8 points for New Zealand. Casey Frank (203-F-77, college: N.Arizona) accounted for 7 points in defeat.

The 31-year old player had a double-double of 34 points and 11 rebounds, while his team crushed Canterbury (#4, 4-5) with 23-point margin 102-79. Very significant was Saints' (#1, 9-0) victory against second-best Rangers (4-3) 103-67. The game was mostly controlled by Saints. Rangers managed to win fourth quarter 26-21. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Saints dominated down low during the game scoring 56 of its points in the paint compared to Rangers' 34.
